The Dreamer's Last Sadness

An excerpt from Beautiful Myths, a poetry collection comprised of poems from January-February, 2002.

Just when you think it starts to feel
your heart falls out, falls down
spins around
and goes away
blown away by the whisper of an errant word
chased away by the death knell
of a fleeting hope's last spent chance

It's a tease
the idea of it
of things
     happening
     occurring
     existing
and you start to doubt your memories
those sweet half-delusions
that they were the work of monsters
     the ones you know
     in there

And so you're robbed of the only fragile thing left
now that your heart's gone
and your memories run too
to make their homes
in garbage cans

only left are the faded flower hopes
you laid all your dreams upon
and taunting you now with them
the music
of the thing
that could not be

It's just one more thing to live with
